US Coast Guard team repatriates 74 Cubans following interdictions off Florida
crews have banned 3,067 Cubans since Oct. 1, 2021
(US COAST GUARD) – The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Pablo Valent repatriated 74 Cubans to Cuba on Friday following multiple interdictions off the Florida Keys.
A Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater HC-130 crew alerted Coast Guard Sector Key West to a rustic vessel at 1:20 a.m. Tuesday about 63 miles east of Marathon.
A Good Samaritan notified the Coast Guard in the Key West area of a rustic vessel around 2 a.m. Tuesday about 20 miles south of Key Colony Beach.
A good Samaritan notified Key West Coast Guard sector watchmen of a rustic sailboat Wednesday at about 8:30 a.m. about 7 miles south of Stock Island.
A law enforcement team from the Key West Coast Guard Station alerted observers in the Key West sector to a migrant vessel, around 9 a.m. Wednesday, about 3 miles south of Key West .
A law enforcement team from Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater alerted observers in the Key West sector to a migrant vessel around 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, about 18 miles northwest of Elbow Cay, Bahamas.
A Customs and Border Protection Air and Sea Operations crew alerted Key West sector observers to a migrant vessel around 11:15 p.m. Wednesday, about 7 miles south of Marquesas Key.
“Families and friends, please encourage your loved ones to seek a safe and legal path to the United States,” said Lt. Cmdr. Mario Gil, Coast Guard District 7. “Migrating illegally on ships without life jackets or safety equipment increases the risk of losing your life at sea.”
Since October 1, 2021, Coast Guard crews have intercepted 3,067 Cubans against:
■ 5,396 Cuban migrants in fiscal year 2016
■ 1,468 Cuban migrants in fiscal year 2017
■ 259 Cuban migrants in fiscal year 2018
■ 313 Cuban migrants in fiscal year 2019
■ 49 Cuban migrants in fiscal year 2020
■ 838 Cuban migrants in fiscal year 2021
Once aboard a Coast Guard cutter, all migrants are provided with food, water, shelter and basic medical care.
