The tanker flying the Russian flag India – formerly the Linda, sanctioned by the US Treasury and accused Iranian oil transport – has been prowling off India since the end of May. Family members of the crew are increasingly worried about their well-being, according to Russian media.

Yulia Khairulaeva, the wife of a crew member aboard the Indiatold Russian outlet (owned by Russian government bank Sverbank) that the crew had gone several months without food or medicine as they loitered off the coast of India.

His account aligns with AIS tracking data. India arrived off Chennai on a voyage from the Singapore Strait on May 25, but did not enter port. Instead, she headed south for Sri Lanka at a slow bell, rounding her southern coast and then transiting northwest along the Indian coast, never exceeding three knots. It arrived off Gujarat in early July and has been loitering about 50 nautical miles off Alang in recent weeks. She reports her draft at eight meters (in ballast).

Lenta journalists contacted the operator, Transmorflot, and learned that the ship needed repairs but could not enter the Indian port due to sanctions. Western sanctions against Russia have limited impact in India, but the India was specifically blacklisted by the US Treasury in February for its ties to sanctioned bank Promsvyazbank. Transmorflot is also blacklisted by the Treasury.

Khairulaeva claimed that the lack of medicine on board the ship is causing health problems for some crew members and food is running out. She said the crew members were well past the end of their contract – some have been on board for 15 months – and she accused the shipowner and the crew members’ union of failing to intervene in the crew name.

India (former name Linda) is an Aframax built in 2003 and flying the Russian flag. It belongs to Transmorflot since 2020.
