A North East engineering company, which focuses on marine and subsea equipment, has expanded into new offices in the Jarrow Business Center manufacturing area, following sustained business growth over the past six month.

DME Systems was created in late 2021 by North East engineers Michael van Zwanenberg and Darren Coombe.

The company designs equipment for multinationals and has carried out more than 20 projects since its creation.

Due to its growth, Stephen Dixon joined the company as a control and power systems engineer, while Richard Purdy was hired as a mechanical engineer.

With the additions, the company will have over 65 years of design experience within the industry.

Michael van Zwanenberg, co-founder of DME Systems, said: “We came across the manufacturing area, and it made perfect sense to make the move. Our business is split 50% into consulting and 50% into manufacturing, and the units available at South Tyneside are well designed to support us in both areas.

“Now we have almost double the space from our last base, and that will help us continue to grow at all levels. When we started, we made projections for our first year of trading and we are Glad to say we’re ahead of target, which is great news.”

This decision allowed the company to undertake one of its largest and most complex projects to date, the design and manufacture of a data acquisition system, HCY skid and ROV to interface with the customer’s specialized tools.

Once operational, it will be used on the high seas up to 6,000 meters deep to analyze the state of the seabed.

Darren Coombes, co-founder of DME Systems, added, “We have taken a family approach to our work at DME. Having lived all my life in the North East, we want to further expand the capabilities and expertise of the region. business is built around people and ensuring a good work-life balance is key to our plans for continued growth.”

Councilor Margaret Meling, Member responsible for Economic Growth, Skills and Climate Change, said: “The Manufacturing Zone has been created to provide much needed quality accommodation for companies operating in the offshore energy and advanced manufacturing to grow and create jobs, so it’s fantastic to see companies such as DME Systems Ltd moving into the facility.”

“Due to the 51-day strike of DSME contractors, the launch of DSME Dock 1 has been delayed for five weeks in an unprecedented situation,” reads the apology from DSME management. “The damage, including business losses, was enormous and the impact was severe in all directions. We also acknowledge the concerns about the Korean shipbuilding industry due to declining foreign customer confidence.

Management said it will take recent events as a lesson and come up with ways of improvement and a win-win cooperation model to work better with its contractors.

“We will humbly listen to voices and suggestions from all walks of life to improve our management,” reads the company’s apology. “We will also work with all members of our company to minimize the damage caused by process delays and quickly restore customer confidence through new active contracting activities with domestic and foreign shipping companies.”

Carbon Capture on the Ocean (CC-Ocean) project conducted in cooperation with Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., part of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) group, Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (“K” Line) and ? ClassNK received the “Marine Engineering of the Year 2021 (Doko Memorial Award)” from the Japan Institute of Marine Engineering (JIME). The award was received in recognition of the world’s first marine CO2 capture system on an actual voyage to successfully separate and capture CO2 from flue gases, with captured CO2 having a purity greater than 99.9%, achieving performance according to plan. The award ceremony was held on July 22 at the Kaiun Club in Tokyo.


This award, given for outstanding technical achievements in the fields of marine engines and equipment, offshore instruments and related marine engineering, aims to draw attention to the innovative character and significance of such achievements in Japan and around the world, and to support future progress. associated scientific and industrial technologies. The award-winning “CC-Ocean” project aims to capture CO2 at sea by converting an existing CO2 capture system for onshore power plants to a marine environment. The system was installed aboard the CORONA UTILITY, a coal carrier for Tohoku Electric Power Co., Inc. operated by “K” Line, with demonstration tests conducted for approximately six months beginning in August 2021. The quantity , the ratio and purity of the captured CO2 were all according to plan, demonstrating the feasibility of capturing CO2 from the combustion gases of marine engines on board ships, where operating conditions differ from those on land.


ClassNK participated in the assessment and verification of the entire project from a security point of view. The knowledge acquired through this project will be used to develop appropriate standards related to CO2 capture technologies to help reduce GHG emissions from ships.

Twenty-nine officer trainees from the Indian Navy and Indian Coastguard, belonging to the 93rd Marine Engineering Specialist Course (MESC) batch, have successfully completed 105 weeks of professional training at INS Shivaji in a parade of disappearance organized on Saturday.

At INS Shivaji, the premier marine engineering training institute of the Indian Navy located at Lonavala, officers received training in various aspects of the field. The trainee officers have been actively involved in technical research on a range of naval projects, including artificial intelligence-based systems, officials said.

Vice Admiral KM Deshmukh, Comptroller of Warship Production and Acquisition, Indian Navy reviewed the course fainting parade. Trophies were awarded to officers excelling in various fields. The prestigious “Hammer” was awarded to the officer with the best overall performance, Lt. Sachin Kumar Singh. The Vice Admiral Daya Shankar Rolling Trophy for “Best Sportsman” was awarded to Lieutenant Sudhanshu Kumar.

Lt Joseph Johnson received the “Positive Life Officer” trophy. Lt. Sachin Kumar Singh won the award for first place in the General Order of Academic Merit and the award for Best Project Syndicate was won by the team of Lt. Vishal Trimurthy, Lt. Ashwin Babu, Lt. Ponmani S , Lt. Gowrav N and Lt. Thanuj Shetty for a project. on ‘Design and development of the centrifugal pump.’

As part of the development of infrastructure, a new accommodation block with a capacity to accommodate apprentice seafarers was inaugurated. Students from the Old Dominion University chapter of the American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE) presented the Marine Engineering program at Batten College of Engineering and Technology and the Digital Shipbuilding program at the Virginia Modeling, Simulation and Analysis Center (VMASC) during Harborfest weekend in Norfolk.

Three members of ODU’s ASNE Chapter competed in the ASNE-SIKA Ultimate Build-A-Boat Challenge, which took place near the Half Moon Cruise and Celebration Center in Town Point Park. Chapter President Daniel Erdogan worked with Mark Anderson, a nuclear engineer at Norfolk Shipyard and a 17-year veteran of the boat-building event, as well as a team including Bruce Thacker and Nathan Wright.

They participated in the construction portion of the event at Harborfest on Saturday. The race part was postponed due to a strong thunderstorm.

ODU’s Batten College of Engineering and Technology and VMASC’s Digital Shipbuilding Program were among the co-sponsors of the event, along with many local maritime industry partners. Net proceeds go to fund ASNE’s mission areas in promoting the naval engineering, shipbuilding and ship repair industry, which also includes funding for engineering scholarships and programs STEM. The donors also covered all the costs of the teams’ participation in the event.

ASNE was founded in 1888 to promote research and development of new steam propulsion technology and new materials applied to warships.

ODU’s Department of Engineering Technology, home to the marine engineering major, was associated with the ASNE chapter of ODU, founded in 2004 by Tony Dean. He serves as a chapter advisor and is also a leader of the marine engineering honors minor at ODU.

VMASC’s Digital Shipbuilding Program was founded in 2018 through a Virginia Growth and Opportunity grant that established the Virginia Digital Shipbuilding Workforce Program. Kosteczko was the program’s first recruit. It now has seven employees and could grow to 10 by the end of 2022.

The project has received nearly $8 million in research grants and has developed 29 digital shipbuilding/marine-related STEM curricula and curricula, which have been used to strengthen the maritime industrial base in Hampton Roads, Virginia. and throughout the country. Through these efforts, in 2019, then-President John R. Broderick announced a partnership that created the Newport News Shipbuilding and Huntington Ingalls Industries Scholars program, which allows 10 and 20 ODU students studying shipbuilding digital to receive scholarships of up to $5,000 per semester.
